#Blogust – Firsts and Dandelions

Since I became a mother six years ago, the meaning of life’s “firsts” have become weightier and almost sacred.  The first baby giggle, first steps, first word, first food, first real hug – my children’s firsts have carved their own deep pockets in my memory.

Watching my kids experience their firsts – diving head first into some of them… well, it makes me want to take stock of my own firsts:  My first time performing on stage, my first kiss, the first time I saw snow. Seeing snow for the first time for me didn’t happen until I was in college.  I remember running up and down the hall of the dorm, knocking on everyone’s door, and telling them to come out because IT WAS SNOWING.  Turns out, I may have made a few people mad because what I thought was snow was really just a small amount of sleet.  I was an island girl, what did I know.  It was still pretty fantastic to me.

I think about all the firsts that I had, and I feel grateful and excited for my own kids to experience some of the same ones.  They are the bullet points of life… and everyone deserves a multitude of happy and healthy firsts.

It’s not only the  big milestone firsts with my kids that take my breath away or douse me in joy.  Often times it’s the little things…

Like blowing on their first dandelion to make a wish…

or not really blowing on their first not-really-a-dandelion to make a wish:

I’m so grateful for my boys and both their big and small firsts.  My kids are healthy…

My kids are happy…

and my kids are protected against most life threatening illnesses.

Love! (Giggling so much at the first snow. As a life-long Michigander, I just can’t relate to that one, unfortunately!)
