Hot Nerd: You know how cathedrals are built so high, and yet their walls are delicately made of a great deal of glass?
Me: Mmm hmm?
Hot Nerd: Architects had to create something to give the cathedral strength… to give it support… so it could reach extraordinary heights without collapsing under it’s own weight… and, without taking away from it’s beauty…
Me: Uh huh.
Hot Nerd: They created what’s called a flying buttress. It juts out from the outside walls at an angle, or an arch, and serves as an external frame… or brace.
Me: Oh.
Hot Nerd: And when you walk into a cathedral, you don’t even realize what’s outside, helping to hold the whole thing up. Flying buttresses are small compared to the magnificence of a cathedral.
Me: What are you saying?
Hot Nerd: I’m saying, let me be your flying buttress.
Me: *blink blink*
No.
Hot Nerd: What? Why not?
Me: Why would I want to assume that I’m gonna collapse?
Hot Nerd: *blink blink*
*** Leave it to me to deny myself a buttress.

Symbolic, but so true. Why DO we do this to ourselves? I tend to be the “I’m strong enough and don’t need you” kind of girl, which is great for being single, but hasn’t worked so well for being in a real relationship.
Maybe I’ll try being just “slightly” less strong?

That’s awesome! I once got Flying Buttress as a trivia question and everyone was shocked that I got it – well, com’on now, I was an art history major! Geez! LOL.

You don’t need no buttress, girl!
Wait… maybe you do… if you want… I’m confused.
I understand the need to be strong by yourself.. but what a totally beautiful analogy by your hottie nerd.
If ever a human needed a buttress, it’s me! Where do I sign up?

Apparently, Hot Nerd is offering his buttress services for free.
Come on over!
Hmmmm. Yeah. I have to say, I would be a little less than thrilled if Steve used an analogy that likened me to a fragile, delicate, glass structure. Who am I kidding; I would be fucking pissed off. Especially when we all know that when the walls of life start to crack and crumble it is usually the women who buttresses it all back up and make it beautiful again. Or a little less broken at least.
BUT (and it’s a big one)…. To give Hot Nerd (and all of our men in general) some credit, there is something to be said for his reminding you that you’re not alone and that when things do start to quiver and sway, with you or in your lives together, that he is there to be what you are for him. Support and strength and a frame of stability to count on.
They may not have the right words to say it, they might even make a mess out of the delivery, but in the end the fact that they love us enough to try, works for me. Besides, who can really find fault when our men are referring to our “beauty” on such a majestic scale… and the fact that they are so small compared to the magnificent structure that we all are. So while you are exacting the beatings (verbally or physically) go a little easy on him … love makes you say stupid things.
Awww he wants to be your buttress. Swoon….

You and your hubby crack me up!!! BUT, I get what he’s saying…I think I want my hubby to be my buttress. WHen I say that to him, he is going to be 100% confused…he won’t even get the symbolisim. He’s gonna look at me like I was smoking something!!

I like the way the two of you think. His offer, so sweet and thoughtful, but you, my grand lady are grand all on your own, and I am sure have your own built in buttress.

Heehee…I tried denial, but it turned out that my buttress actually does help me and I don’t even collapse anymore! Sometimes a buttress turns into a supporting wall without you even seeing it!
I love this conversation though…I’m pretty sure I have a hot nerd too.
