You Should’ve Known Better

Dear people of the entire world,

If you’re a woman, please don’t take private nude photos of yourself and store them in what you are led to believe is a secure location. It doesn’t matter if they’re for your lover who is far away, or if you’re just feeling sexy. It doesn’t matter if it’s password protected. Don’t do it.

Don’t wear short skirts either. It doesn’t matter if it’s ninety degrees. It doesn’t matter if your legs look the best they ever have. It doesn’t matter if you feel fantastic in that skirt. Don’t do it.

… and please, for the love of all that is holy, don’t drink alcohol. It doesn’t matter if it’s a party. It doesn’t matter if your guy friend is drinking. It doesn’t matter if the manufacturer forgot to put on the label, “liquid ‘asking for it'”. Don’t do it.

If you’re a woman, please don’t walk around outside alone if the sun has gone down. It doesn’t matter if the stars are pretty. Don’t be stupid. Don’t do it.

If you’re a woman, please don’t publicly illuminate a societal ill in hopes of change. Don’t “incite”. Don’t do it.

If you’re a blogger, please stop publishing things. It doesn’t matter if your words are copyrighted. Anything on the web is up for grabs. If you’re smart, you won’t write words with the goal of having them read. Don’t do it…

and if you’re smart enough to have renounced communicating digitally, please don’t use paper either. Paper has been giving ¬†people paper cuts for centuries. Don’t do it…

because if you do get cut…

there will be a large portion of the population just waiting with sliced lemons and salt, declaring it would never have happened to them.

“Honestly, you should’ve known better.”

Sometimes bad things happen to good people. The world lacks quite a bit in justice. Can we at least try to make up for some of it with compassion?

Seriously. For gods sake, what were they thinking?

There are times when I wish that I could stand up and compare the aftermath, this social media arm chair quarterbacking being tantamount to holding a woman down while she is violated. It’s hard to point your blame in direction that society prefers not to look, but there is nothing that merits rape, nothing that deserves threats of death, mutilation, or sodomy.

    Thank you, Jenni.

  3. Alison says:

You always find the words for what I’m thinking, Jenni.

    Well said Jenni!

You said it all right there!

    Yes. A thousand times, yes.

  8. And this is one of the reasons I love you and your face. Rainbow pens.

  9. Roxanne says:

There it is. Compassion. That’s what we need.

Right on. Just commented on this on another blogger’s post where the same thing happened with her photos/video. It’s insane to think that someone deserved this, or should’ve known better. That’s like telling someone whose house was robbed, “Well you shouldn’t have bought a nice house to begin with.”
