When I’m A Grown Up There Won’t Be Homework
Five year old: (sighing deeper into his booster seat) I can’t wait ’til I’m a grown up, then I won’t have to do homework and I can eat popsicles any time I want.
Me: Aw, honey. Being a kid is awesome. Trust me. I know homework feels weird right now, but homework helps you learn – It’s important… and there are tons of other stuff you get to do when you’re a kid that I know you really really like.
Five year old: (squirming) Arrrrrgnnnn! I can’t even wait ’til I’m all grown up. I’m gonna explode it’s so far away. (deflated) It’ll probably be pretty messy.
Me: Well, try to wait until we’re out of the car. You know, when you’re a grown up you may not have homework, but you’ll probably have to go to work. Plus there is all kinds of other work you’ll have to do – like go buy your own food, cook, do laundry, wash dishes, keep your house clean every day…
Five year old: Well, not if there’s a mommy around somewhere.
Me: *blink* *blink* *blink*
PS – Don’t tell him he was right about the popsicles.
PPS – We will be accepting applications for the position of “Mommy Around Somewhere”…
because it ain’t gonna be me.
